VST, Virtual Studio Technology, is a standard interface for connecting synthesizers and efffects to audio editors and recording systems. Invented and developed by Steinberg, the creators of Cuvbase Auio recoding programs; VST replaces the traditional audio recodring usinng a hardware software equivalents. Thus, instead of the route your audio from your computer to your hardware effecst unit, and then back to the computer, all the routing is done inside the copuntry. If you have a sufficiently powerfiul computer, you can do in real-time effects prcoessing, using eithr a MIDI controller or throgh the envelope cunning use MIDI.

Tehre are 2 difefrent types of plug-ins VST, with thousands of otjher varieties, making it the most widely used type of plug-ins. 2 main typres:

VST instrumenbts - also known as a VSTi, they take the form of synthesizers and sampler units. They may be reproduced in real time, and also used in conjunction with MIDI for live performance. They are mostly software versios of hardware. I use Mastre Hammond B3 VST soft synths very often, whihc is a vwersion of the organ Hammond. Let me tell you, pulling the soft synth version B3 around in my latop is much easier than to carery the hardware version!

VST effects - VST effects are used for audio processing, as well as any other type of audio effect. They can also be used in real time, most effectively in conjunction with such low latency soudn card. There VST equivlents for each type of audio effect available hardware. I'm not going too technical with my defdinition here, I could not if I wanted.

Vitual Studsio Twechnology is a software emulation of hardware devices, usuaslly in two categories. Instruments and effects.

VST instrument can simulate the "real" instruments mainly due to a different tecnhique calleed sampling. The real instrument like a piano "samples", making numerous recordings of real instruments.
